The Plan
For over twenty years, residents and community leaders have envisioned the reuse of this unique former industrial site located next to one of Pittsburgh’s most desirable neighborhoods. The Summerset at Frick Park development team, city leaders and a creative team of planners and landscape architects convened in the mid 1990s and created a master plan based on New Urbanism, a design and planning discipline that responds to the needs and desires of urban dwellers by creating livable cities, communities and neighborhoods. Summerset at Frick Park places an emphasis on pedestrian scale blocks, interconnected streets, alleyways for car access and frequent common areas and green spaces. The residential plan has been created to include a variety of home types, sizes and living options to create a diverse and dynamic urban community.
Since the formation of the original master plan, Federal and local governments have invested substantially in the environmental restoration work needed to rejuvenate this former brownfield industrial site. Environmental restoration plans and procedures have been reviewed and approved by the Department of Environmental Protection and are available for public view at the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, Squirrel Hill Branch.
