In 1910, famed landscape architect Frederick Law Olmstead wrote that the valley of Nine Mile run presented "the most striking opportunity… for a large park. Through the Summerset at Frick Park develpemnt and the efforts of federal, state,and local partners, Olmstead's vision is being realized.

Offering idyllic pastoral vistas and pathways for the public, Nine Mile Run is the largest free-flowing stream in the city of Pittsburgh and was recently the site of the largest urban stream restoration project in the country. This $7.7 million restoration, not only brought three species of game fish to the stream, but also expanded the natural beauty of Frick Park by almost 100 acres.

Now the reconfigured and replanted area along Nine Mile Run serves as a pedestrian and bike path between Frick Park and the Monongahela River. SQUIRREL HILL
Summerset at Frick Park in Squirrel Hill, is one of Pittsburgh's most popular neighborhoods. Squirrel Hill is alive with places to explore. From coffee shops, delis and bakeries to groceries, boutiques and movie theaters. Bordered by Frick and Schenley Parks, Squirrel Hill also offers plenty of green space to hike and bike — as well as tennis courts and an ice skating rink. The population includes students from nearby Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Pittsburgh, Duquesne University, Chatham College and Carlow College as well as families and older residents.

OAKLAND
Bustling with museums, universities and restaurants, Squirrel Hill’s next door neighborhood is a cultural hub. Home to the Carnegie Museum of Art and Natural History, the Carnegie Library, Carnegie Mellon University, and the University of Pittsburgh, including its 42-story gothic Cathedral of Learning, Oakland is full of energy. For a breathtaking array of plants, be sure to visit the Phipps Conservatory & Botanical Gardens. A mere mile and a half away, Oakland is a quick bus or car ride from Summerset at Frick Park.

SHADYSIDE
Fifth Avenue in Shadyside was once known as Millionaires Road, in recognition of the stretch of road jeweled with mansions. These days, upscale shops and designer boutiques line Shadyside’s Walnut Street and Ellsworth Avenue attracting shoppers with discriminating taste. Shadyside also provides plenty of nightlife after the shops close down thanks to some of the area’s trendiest restaurants and bars. Another shady refuge in the city is Mellon Park, which hosts free Sunday music concerts throughout the summer. Shadyside is also home to Shadyside Hospital, a member of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center system of hospitals.

POINT BREEZE
Point Breeze is a tree-lined neighborhood situated next to Frick Park. Shady streets line the neighborhood, which has its own charming downtown. In the late 19th century, steel baron, Henry Clay Frick made this area his home. His Victorian mansion, Clayton, still proudly stands and is now a museum open for tours. An accompanying art museum and popular café are also situated on the beautifully manicured grounds. Nearby Highland Park is home to the Pittsburgh Zoo.

WATERFRONT
Directly across the Monongahela from Summerset at Frick Park sits a new shopping district with an old soul. The Waterfront in Homestead is the site of the former Homestead steel mill, which has been completely transformed. Now it's home to major national retail stores, a multi-screen cinema, and numerous restaurants. The Browns Hill Road entrance, which is slated to be complete in 2009, will make the Waterfront even more convenient to Summerset residents.

For families with children, Summerset at Frick Park is located in the Pittsburgh Public School District. Children attend Minadeo Elementary School and Allderdice High School, which houses a pre-engineering magnet school. Please confirm school placement with the Pittsburgh Public School District. There are a number of excellent private schools nearby as well.
